Археологические раскопки у Регистана в Самарканде

An expedition near the Registan square in Samarkand has uncovered a layer dating to the 13th century — with ceramics, coins and fragments of glassware that change our understanding of the scale of medieval trade in the region.

Finds on the Silk Road

Among the artefacts are glazed wares from Persia and China, confirming that Samarkand was not a peripheral town but one of the main hubs of the Silk Road. Coins from various dynasties point to brisk monetary circulation.

Of particular interest were the remains of workshops where, scholars believe, paper was produced — a technology that came to the region from China and spread from here further west.

Excavations will continue next season; some of the finds will be transferred to the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, which is preparing a dedicated exhibition on the Timurid era.
