The Silk Road Today

“The Silk Road Today” is a multimedia longread by The Stans about what unites Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan: from trade corridors and shared rivers to cuisine, music and heritage.
The project features on-the-ground reporting, interactive maps, archival photographs and interviews with historians, entrepreneurs and travellers. We followed the ancient route from Bukhara to Issyk-Kul to show how the past lives on in the present.
The Silk Road was never merely a road for goods. It was a road for ideas — and it is open again.
