Central Asian Countries Rank Among the World’s Most Peaceful Nations
All Five Central Asian Countries Rank in the Top Half of the Global Peace Index 2026.
The Global Peace Index is an annual ranking by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) that assesses the level of peacefulness across 163 countries and territories.
In the latest edition, Uzbekistan ranked 37th with a score of 1.726, followed by Kazakhstan in 44th place (1.771), Tajikistan in 47th (1.799), Kyrgyzstan in 61st (1.853), and Turkmenistan in 66th (1.903). All five Central Asian countries were classified by the IEP as having a high level of peacefulness.
Central Asia Against a Global Backdrop
The region’s performance stands out against a global decline in peacefulness. According to the 2026 GPI, the global average score deteriorated by 0.7%, marking the 12th consecutive year of decline in global peacefulness. Over the past year, peacefulness deteriorated in 99 countries, while 62 countries recorded improvements.
At the same time, Eastern Europe and Central Asia as a whole recorded a slight improvement. The region’s average score stood at 2.114, improving by 0.006 points.
The Global Peace Index is based on 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators grouped into three broad domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.
