Uzbekistan is digitizing its environmental data

On July 28, Green University launched the national ECODATA platform, designed to integrate biodiversity data and information on protected natural areas.

In essence, ECODATA serves as a unified national database of Uzbekistan’s natural environment. It will consolidate information on rare plant and animal species, protected areas, forests, wetlands, and other natural assets.

According to the developers, environmental data is currently scattered across government agencies, research institutions, and conservation organizations. The new platform is designed to bring this information together in a single system, making it easier to access, manage, and use.

For researchers, this means faster access to data for scientific studies. Government authorities will be able to rely on up-to-date information when developing environmental policies and preparing reports, while staff at nature reserves and national parks will be able to regularly update information on the condition of protected areas.

ECODATA consists of seven modules and integrates more than 60 interconnected databases. The platform will contain information on species listed in Uzbekistan’s Red Book, their habitats, protected natural areas, forests, water resources, and the results of scientific research.

In the future, the system is expected to be expanded with a mobile application, automated data updates, and integration with international environmental databases.

ECODATA was developed as part of the Aral Sea Wetlands project, implemented by the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims to conserve biodiversity and restore the wetland ecosystems of the Lower Amu Darya.
