Almaty to Become UN’s New Digital Hub
The new centre will bring together and promote digital solutions that can benefit countries across Asia and the Pacific. The centre is scheduled to open in 2027.
The decision to establish the centre was adopted in April 2026 and received the support of all 52 ESCAP member states. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were among the co-sponsors of the resolution.
The centre will be based in Almaty. It will become ESCAP’s sixth such facility in the region, following centres in Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, India and Iran.
The new centre will focus in particular on least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states. It will help them adopt modern digital technologies and narrow the digital development gap.
Kazakhstan also sees the centre as an opportunity to promote its own IT solutions and technologies in international markets.
